Growing up Digital

According to a survey done by author Don Tapscott (http://www.growingupdigital.com/Fwhois.html) for his book Growing Up Digital, young kids say that their parents ought to chill when it comes to their involvement in cyber love. These are the reasons they gave:

  1. No one can catch an STD through a modem.
  2. Girls can’t get pregnant in a chat room.
  3. Boys can’t get girls pregnant in a chat room.
  4. Kids practice reading and writing in order to chat.
  5. The car won’t break down.
  6. Heavy breathing is a non-issue with a computer screen.
  7. Meeting in a chat room does not mean having to get an outfit from Abercrombie.
  8. Curfew is not an issue – the kids are already home.
  9. When kids are on the computer, they’re not watching TV.
  10. The Internet motto: “No alcohol served here.”

Hmmm – the kids have some points here, eh?
I brought up two kids, alone I might add as their father deserted them at ages 5 and 7 and hasn’t been seen since, and my take on their teen-hood was that they were going to do “it,” whatever “it” might be, no matter what I said or did.
So I tended to err on the liberal side as in allowing my children to have their boyfriends and girlfriends spend the night.
This way, I thought, I knew exactly where they were and since I had preached the litanies of safe sex, they were, I hoped, safe.

Back to Tapscott survey, would kids get bored playing out their fantasies in cyberspace and seek more secret and exciting pleasures in the real world? What do you all think?

In addition to being an author, Donovan was a college professor and taught writing and literature courses for 10 years.
During that time, she met scores of young people who provided inspiration.

Donovan’s unique style of writing as well as her never-ending candor and wit will make readers think twice before clicking the mouse once.
