Prince Charming: Not
By MaryAnna Donovan
It’s back to online dating time.
I recently did a reading and conducted a discussion of my book here in my hometown, and in preparation, I did some reflection.
I thought about my online dating experiences, many funny, some sad, and one very pregnant one – pregnant in terms of a higher order message, so to speak. Here’s what happened.
I had been involved with online dating for about a year at the time, and had gone through a gamut of experiences, mostly disappointing.
Then, one day, I arrived upon an interesting profile.
The more I read, the higher I rose out of my chair.
Everything sounded perfect: his essay was funny, honest, and a touch self-deprecating.
He was a teacher, like me.
He loved reading and the arts, enjoyed the outdoors, and so on.
I mean, everything was right-on!
At long last, I thought, my search is over.
Whatever you do, my friends, don’t set yourself up like I did.
First, the man was a half-hour late for our meeting, and when he arrived, he proceeded to tell me all about the toilets he toured on the way because of his severe case of (ahem) the runs.
Then, he was not what I thought he’d be in terms of his confidence in himself and his overall presentation.
To be sure, this was a nice man, but he was not the man I had fantasized into being my dream man.
In addition to being an author, Donovan was a college professor and taught writing and literature courses for 10 years.
During that time, she met scores of young people who provided inspiration.
Donovan’s unique style of writing as well as her never-ending candor and wit will make readers think twice before clicking the mouse once.
