My reasons for writing the book

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

In my previous blog entry I talked about my grief and anxiety relative to my book, Why I Hate to Date Online. I want to talk to you a little more about the book and what prompted me to write it.

First, I met “my person,” “my partner,” “my man-friend,” or whatever you want to call him on a dating site. I met him on a true lark, which I’ll tell you more about in the book. Prior to that, I spent 4 years on and off “looking for love” in all the wrong(?) places.

In addition to my personal online dating experience, I recently finished my masters degree in digital literacy. What the heck is that, you say? (most people do…lol) It’s about how the Internet is changing everything we know about traditional means of learning, getting news, doing research, watching videos, communicating with each other, and tons more. With these changes and the now ubiquity of technology, we are also in the midst of what will prove to be a cultural revolution. And though I don’t directly discuss this view in the book, online dating is certainly a very important aspect of how cultural mores are changing, and how individual people are being affected.

What I’m hoping you do after reading this book is THINK. I throw a bunch of outrageous ideas at you – some you’ll agree with, some you won’t – and I want you to delve down into yourself rather than coast along this dating (and digital) highway on autopilot.
